Thatch Roof Calculator

Estimate the number of thatch bundles, expected lifespan, and maintenance schedule for a straw, palm, or grass roof from plan area and pitch.

Bundles Required
669
Covered Roof Area
83.52 m²
Expected Lifespan
15 years

Straw: re-coat top layer every 5 years; full replacement at 15 years.

How this works

Plan area is converted to true roof area using the slope factor, then multiplied by bundles per m²:

slope = √(1 + (pitchPct/100)²)
coveredArea = roofArea × slope
bundles = ceil(coveredArea × bundlesPerM²)

bundlesPerM²: straw 8, palm 6, grass 10

The slope factor is the hypotenuse-to-base ratio. A 30% pitch (rise/run) corresponds to slope ≈ 1.044, so an 80 m² plan area covers about 83.5 m² of true roof.

Worked example

A 80 m² plan with a 30% pitch, thatched in straw:

  • Slope = √(1 + 0.09) ≈ 1.044
  • Covered area = 80 × 1.044 ≈ 83.5 m²
  • Bundles = ceil(83.5 × 8) = 668 bundles
  • Lifespan = 15 years
  • Maintenance: re-coat the top layer every 5 years; full replacement at year 15.

FAQ

What is a thatching bundle?

A bundle is the standard sheaf used by thatchers — a tied or wrapped handful of straw, palm fronds, or long grass weighing 5 to 8 kg in the dry. Local terms vary (puli in Hindi, paral in Nepali, atta in Bengali). The bundles are tied to roof battens or purlins and overlapped like fish scales so water sheds down the slope.

Why does pitch affect the bundle count?

Plan area underestimates the actual roof surface. A steep pitch has a longer rafter for the same horizontal span, so it has more material to cover. The slope factor — √(1 + (pitch%/100)²) — converts plan area to true roof area. A flat roof has slope 1.0; a 100% pitch (45°) has slope 1.41.

Which material lasts longest?

Palm thatch lasts about 25 years, straw about 15 years, and grass about 10 years. Lifespan depends heavily on pitch (steeper sheds water faster), exposure (north-facing slopes age slower in the southern hemisphere and vice versa), and rainfall. Treated reed (Phragmites) used in Europe lasts 40 to 60 years but is rare in South Asia.

What is the recommended minimum pitch for thatch?

45% (about 24°) is the minimum recommended pitch. Below this, water tends to soak in instead of running off, and the thatch rots from inside. Traditional South Asian thatch roofs are typically pitched at 50 to 100% (27 to 45°). Steeper is always better for longevity.

How is thatch maintained?

Re-coating is the standard maintenance — laying a fresh layer over the weathered top without stripping the underlying core. Straw is re-coated every 5 years, palm every 4, grass every 2. Spot-repair damaged patches in between. A well-maintained thatch roof can last twice as long as one left alone.

Is thatch a fire hazard?

Yes — untreated thatch can ignite from chimney sparks or nearby fire. Mitigations include keeping the chimney top at least 1.5 m above the ridge, fitting a spark arrester, applying a fire retardant (boric acid solution or commercial intumescent spray) every 5 years, and installing smoke alarms inside. In dense settlements, prefer fire-treated thatch or a different roof material.
